Four Top Tips, Straight From the Pros, For You To Follow During National Dog Week, and Beyond

(Tewksbury, MA – September 30, 2010) --- It’s National Dog Week and renowned veterinary nutritionist Dr. Edward Moser has teamed up with Animal Planet Star Andrea Arden to give dog lovers their top tips for raising a healthy pet during National Dog Week, and beyond.

Food comes first! Both Dr. Moser and Ms. Arden advise owners to feed their dogs a healthy, balanced natural diet.  For starters, when selecting a pet food, they recommend looking for high quality, wholesome ingredients on the label.

“So many well-meaning pet parents think they are making the best choice for their dogs because the package says the food is natural or has a photo of vegetables. Then they are stunned to read the ingredient panel,” Dr. Moser said. “Look for authentic, natural ingredients whose names you understand – like lamb or chicken – at the top of the ingredient list. Seek out nutritional balance, and beware of unnecessary calories.”

Dr. Moser recommends Wellness® Natural Food for Pets. Wellness’ nutritious natural recipes are made with quality protein sources, wholesome grains, a rainbow of fruits and vegetables, and carefully chosen Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids, with no wheat, corn or soy, and no added artificial flavors, colors or preservatives. Each Wellness recipe has been specially formulated with the specific needs of dogs in mind, whatever their life stage or lifestyle. Like Wellness Just for Puppy, made with nutrient-rich wholesome ingredients that fulfill a puppy's special developmental nutritional requirements.

Next, the pair encourage adding more exercise into your dog’s routine. “Just like we do, pets need regular exercise to keep them on the path to good health,” said Ms. Arden. “Set aside some time every day to do something physical with your pet, like a game of fetch or a run on the beach. Your dog will look forward to it, and you’ll both enjoy a happier, healthier life together.”

A well-groomed dog is a happy dog, so be sure to keep them looking good too! Use a soft bristled brush on your dog’s coat each day; keep nails short and well-trimmed. And don't forget to brush to combat “dog breath” and keep their canines sparkling clean.

Proper socialization skills are also important. The best way to socialize a dog is with frequent exposure to a variety of different people and other dogs in a positive setting. It’s best to start with a puppy, but it’s never too late to help a dog improve its social skills, the pair said. And both recommend yearly well-pet check-ups at the veterinarian to assure you’re on the right track.

Be sure to follow these tips all year long, not only during National Dog Week, to be the best dog owner you can be and ensure a lifetime of well-being for your dog too.
